The 10 Commandments

The 10 Commandments

The Ten Commandments are the foundation of the ceremonial, civil and moral laws found in the holy Bible. The Most High God gave the Prophet Moses hundreds of laws which stem from the Ten Commandments. Today, many false teachers claim to believe in Christ yet reject the writings of Moses. They refuse to keep God’s laws.

John 5:46 “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. Verse 47 “But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”

Christ summed up all the laws relating to the Most High God and man into two commandments.
Matthew 22:36 “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Verse 37 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Verse 38 This is the first and great commandment.
Verse 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Verse 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Where did the Savior, Christ, get that from? The writings of Moses.
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
Verse 5 “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

Leviticus 19:18 “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.”

Loving the Lord with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might means doing all the laws that relate to worshipping the Most High God. For example, the first four laws of the Ten Commandments relate to worshipping the Most High.

Loving your neighbor as you love yourself means doing the laws that relate to dealing with your neighbor. For example, the last six laws of the Ten Commandments relate to dealing with your neighbor.

All the commandments and laws that pertain to them are important for us to do to attain Salvation.
Psalms 119:166 “Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.”
Matthew 19:16 “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
Verse 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Verse 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
verse 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.”

So the Savior, Christ teaches us that to have eternal life (salvation) we must keep the commandments. Beware of deceivers that claim whatever law Christ didn’t mention, means we don’t have to keep it. In Matthew 19:16-19 Christ never mentions several of the Ten Commandments like “No graven images or idols to worship” so does that
mean we can worship idols? NO! Christ gave that Israelite he spoke with an
abbreviated answer specific for him.
1John 2:4 “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

We shall give you a very brief understanding of the Ten Commandments.

No other Gods before the Most High(YHWH)
No idols and no images
Don’t take the Lord’s name(YHWH)in vain
Remember the Sabbath day
Honor thy Father and thy Mother
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness
Thou shalt not covet

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Joshua 23:7 “That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:”

THE SECOND COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:4 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exodus 20:5  “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;”
Exodus 20:6 “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”

We are not to buy or build, idols or paintings, wood or stone to pray to.

Jeremiah 2:27 “Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.”
Jeremiah 2:28 “But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.”

THE THIRD COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20: 7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”

To take the Lord’s name in vain means to take the Lord’s name in LIES.

Jeremiah 23:25 “I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.”
Jeremiah 23:26 “How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;”

THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Exodus 20:9 “Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
Exodus 20:10 “But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Verse 11 “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The Sabbath is the day of worship
Isaiah 66:23 “And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.”

This commandment is the foundation of all the Holy days ordained in the scriptures.

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:12 “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”

This law pertains to those that have authority over you.

1Timothy 5:1 “Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
Verse 2 “The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.”

THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill.
The beginning of breaking this law is the spirit of anger which leads to hate which leads to murder.

Matthew 5:21 ” Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:”
Verse 22 “But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.”
1 John 3:15 “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”

THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:14 “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

A man having sex with another man’s wife is adultery. A married woman having sex with someone other than her husband is adultery.

This is the law of Marriage, and from it stems all the laws that pertain to sexual immorality (fornication) found in Leviticus 18 which break the covenant of marriage. Breaking this is the only reason for divorce.
Matthew 19:9 “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be
for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso
marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”

THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:15 “Thou shalt not steal.”

Taking something that does not belong to you.

Ephesians 4:28 “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”

THE NINTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:16 “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”

This law deal with not lying and dealing unjustly.

Leviticus 19:11 “Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.”

THE TENTH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.”

Coveting is desiring/lusting for something that belongs to someone else.

Romans 7:7 “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.”
